THREE NEW 4K CAMCORDERS FROM JVC

JVC’s has just released three new models to it’s 4K line-up, the one most filmmakers would be interested in is its high end GY-LS300 Super 35 4K camera.

Oddly the LS300 comes with a Micro 4/3 (MFT) mount, meaning the lens designed for that mount shouldn’t cover a Super 35 CMOS sensor. JVC is hoping the LS300 can adapt to all manner of interchangeable lenses, partly due to the flange being short making it perfect for use with adapters. Combined with the Variable Scan Mapping tech, which JVC says will “maintain the native angle of view” for numerous lens, including Super 16, Super 35 and you can even attach it to microscopes. The information as to how that tech works hasn’t been offered by JVC (it’s magic!) but we’re assuming it has to do with scaling/cropping the image, depending on what resolution/fps you use.

The LS300 also comes with 4:2:2 sampling, UHD and full HD recording at 60p/50Mbs, dual-codec recording (mov & AVCHD) simultaneously to (non-proprietry) SDHC or SDXC media cards, with 4K output via 3G-SDI or HDMI , dual XLR inputs with switchable mic/line and phantom power, integrated handle with hot shoe, and dedicated mic mount. It also supports IP network remote control, with remote viewing, metadata editing, and FTP of clips across network connections via optional adapters.

The other cameras released are the GY-HM200, a 4K Ultra HD camcorder with HD streaming, and the GY-HM170 a cheaper option 4K Ultra HD palm-sized camera.

Both the LS300 and HM200 have a built-in HD streaming engine with Wi-Fi and 4G LTE connectivity, allowing live streaming to Ustream, Wowza Streaming Engine, and the ProHD Broadcaster server (powered by Zixi) via the RTMP protocol. They also have Zixi’s Advanced Streaming Technology (AST) which gives content-aware error correction and bandwidth shaping, while JVC’s ‘Streamconfidence’ delivers real-time feedback of LTE and streaming status in the viewfinder.

All three new cameras feature dual SDHC/SDXC card slots for dual, backup, and continuous recording. The camcorders also include a 3.5-inch LCD display and 1.56 megapixel colour viewfinder, both with smart focus assist functions, and offer two-channel audio recording.

The GY HM170 and GY HM200 camcorders are expected to be available for market delivery in February 2015 with the GY LS300 available shortly thereafter.
