JVC GY-HM890 Fibre Studio Camera Systems

Quadrant Events has just purchased a suite of the new JVC GY-HM890 fibre studio camera systems.

“The JVC GY-HM890 ticked all the boxes in terms of quality, cost and ease of use,” said Andy Hogben, managing director of Quadrant Events. “We are replacing Sony DSR-570 cameras and were initially worried about not going down the 2/3” CCD route, but the GY-HM890, with its excellent F12 sensitivity, is more than capable of providing the high image quality we were looking for. The single fibre connection was important too, as it makes everything simple for our customers who wish to dry hire the cameras. The whole integration with the fibre system was impressive, again ideal for installing easily at live events.”

Quadrant Events is British based company whose services include AV hire, event production, delegate registration services, event design and video production, so fibre-based camera systems provide greater ease of use on site. “We need to adapt for the many different sized venues that we find ourselves in,” Andy explained. “Some days we may need a 150m cable run; others just a 30m. The integration of the fibre system to the GY-HM890 is excellent too, with every signal we could need – plus power – all down a single cable.”

With their event work including conferences and award dinners, Quadrant’s new fibre camera systems will be at the core of their productions.

“We are building a Portable Production Unit (PPU), which will consist of JVC’s fibre base stations and OCPs, plus a Blackmagic HD/SD vision mixer and Blackmagic solid state recorder,” Andy adds. “We will mainly use the systems in HD but like the flexibility to switch them back to SD when required. The new cameras and PPUs will ensure that we present the best possible images live on screen during our events, especially as the signal paths to the projectors are also fibre-based. In addition, we will be able to present our clients with the highest quality recordings of their events. The GY-HM890’s ability to record in-camera is important for live events, as it allows us to provide ISO recordings directly within the camera and also use them in ENG mode for greater flexibility.”
