MOBILE MICS

MXL Microphones has seen the future and it is mobile. The US company has veered from its pro audio product focus with the launch of a new line of mobile and tablet-compatible microphones for audio and video recording on the go.

Speaking at the annual National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas, MXL sales and marketing director Perry Goldstein said the company’s growth would come from its mobile line: “Not many people are going into a traditional studio any more, so this is the future.”

The Mobile Media series will work with most iOS, Android and Windows devices with a 3.5mm minijack, and the first system to ship is a packaged kit for mobile video. The MXL MM-VE001 includes an FR-310 shotgun mic, an impedance-matching cable with 3.5mm plug and a fully adjustable bracket mount. The kit will be followed by four other models in the range: the MM-110 boundary mic, MM-120 desktop electret condenser, MM0139 handheld electret and MM-140 battery powered condenser.

The MM-VE001 kit will be available next month and the additional mics will ship early next year. Australian pricing is unconfirmed but it’s available in the US for just under $200.
