The new smartLAV from Australia’s Rode Microphones is a cost-effective, portable way to record broadcast-quality audio from a smartphone or tablet. The professional-grade lapel mic plugs directly into a headset input and employs an omni-directional capsule and comes with a mounting clip and a foam pop shield. The smartLav works with any audio app that accepts input from the headset connection, but it’s optimised for Rode’s new Rec app for Apple iOS, which turns an iOS device into a discreet, fully-fledged field recorder with a range of equalisation presets to suit various recording situations as well as professional editing functions and the ability to publish to SoundCloud and Dropbox direct from the app. smartLav retails for $65 and you can find the full Rec app in the App Store for $6.49, or an LE version for free.
