STREAMING CAMCORDERS FROM JVC

Using IP-based network video has become a major issue in today’s broadcast industry. Most companies are hesitant to adopt the tech, largely due to issues of unsecured internet or a lack of access to high-speed private IP networks for secure broadcast signal transmission in HD quality. Yea ok Europeans, we KNOW you have 1GB speeds, but the rest of the planet hasn’t evolved as far as net speeds go. And don’t even get me started on Australia’s NBN fiasco, okay? Moving on…

JVC has just joined with Zixi, (an IP broadcasting company) for cloud-enabled networking, with the aim to push forward this innovative solution.

There are, of course, advantages to IP broadcasting technology, used in the field it would definitely make live video data transfer easier. Particularly if you have access to 4G, which is plenty faster than DSL+ (at least in my neck of the woods).

Another advantage being that ENG and EFP applications benefit from minimised technical effort and when signal transmission is secure and lossless, there will be minimal latency.

The first result of the partnership between JVC and Zixi includes an integrated IP broadcasting solution, on the JVC GY-HM650, GY HM850 and GY-HM890 camcorders, meaning there’s no need for any additional equipment. We like that.

According to the press release, Zixi’s streaming technology applies content-aware error correction to compensate packet loss, which can occur during transmission via wireless internet connections. In this operating mode, the decoder analyses internet link performance (Link Monitoring) and ensures that the camera will make bandwidth adjustments. If necessary, data packets are transmitted again with resultant latency being kept within tight limits. This kind-of forward error correction is able to reliably compensate jitter and packet loss, up to 30 percent (apparently). By doing this, stable data streaming under difficult conditions is ensured – even if signal detection of conventional systems fails. For safety reasons, LCD monitor and camera viewfinder display streaming status and signal quality. On the receiving side, only a Zixi-compatible decoder or server is required. Which also, allows additional features such as time shift streaming, cloud-based recording and playback from the data cloud.
