Do you want to begin editing? This comprehensive workshop is an exercise-based course covering basic editing procedures and the many features of the beginner package of your choice plus and a basic demo and insight into the pros and cons of each one. Gain an overall understanding of the principles and strategies for non-linear editing and learn about the basic features of any of the programs:Choose to learn on Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer 6, Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X

  • Setting up a project
  • Capturing media
  • Basic picture editing
  • Basic sound editing
  • Codecs
  • Special techniques like titles, credit rolls, layers, filters, image effects, transitions

A maximum of five participants ensures you one-on-one tutoring on any of the following edit software:

Get an overview of sound principles and basic recording techniques from AFI veteran and freelance sound recordist, Gretchen Thornburn ( I Frankenstein, Big Momma’s Boy).
In this course you will learn the basics of screen location recording for film and television.

Learn how to:
– Understand the theory of sound recording and design, utilize boom mics, directional mics, camera mics and lapel mics to record quality sound under all sorts of diverse and often difficult, environmental conditions

Documentary Filmmaking Introduction at Open Channel

DOCFI 1304: Thursday & Friday December 12, 13 (6.00-9.00pm), Saturday & Sunday December 14 & 15 (10am-5pm)
Make a film – tell a story. An introduction to Documentary filmmaking with Olivia Peniston-Bird

Get the skills to make your own short documentary with this intensive practical course. Designed for beginners, this course gives you a solid technical and creative foundation.

Tutor Olivia Peniston-Bird has worked in television, feature film and documentary production, and film festival programming. As London based Assistant Director Olivia worked with leading UK directors including Jonathon Glazer (Sexy Beast) Roger Michell (Enduring Love) and Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love) on films in England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, Croatia, Bosnia, The Dominican Republic and Cuba. Upon returning to Melbourne Olivia began her directing career. Her short film Goggles, was a Sony Tropfest finalist, and her short film Stony Point was selected for the Melbourne International Film Festival in where she was selected to attend its Accelerator program.

Be guided by an experienced filmmaker to:
-Examine storytelling conventions
-Understand the process of concept development
-Understand legal and ethical issues
-Conduct interviews
-Use camera, lighting, sound and editing equipment
-Collaboratively shoot and edit a short documentary exercise
