The classic monster flick was re-released two years later as <em><strong>Godzilla, King of the Monsters!<\/strong><\/em> (1956) with Canadian actor Raymond Burr spliced into the edit to make the film palatable to western audiences. The creature feature has been filmed 28 more times since then, with the latest reboot &#8216;demolishing&#8217; this year box office records taking close to US$100 million in it&#8217;s opening weekend.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Story by Nicole Boyd<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Director <strong>Gareth Edwards<\/strong> had his work cut out for him revamping the franchise; particularly <em>that<\/em> roar, along with creating a truly &#8216;smashing&#8217; (last of the puns) sound design in <strong>Dolby Atmos\u00a0<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3389\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3389\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3389 size-full\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/videoandfilmmaker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/VIDEO_TStitle3ch0frame13701.jpg\" alt=\"VIDEO_TStitle3ch0frame13701\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/videoandfilmmaker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/VIDEO_TStitle3ch0frame13701.jpg 720w, https:\/\/videoandfilmmaker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/VIDEO_TStitle3ch0frame13701-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/videoandfilmmaker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/VIDEO_TStitle3ch0frame13701-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/videoandfilmmaker.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/VIDEO_TStitle3ch0frame13701-296x197.jpg 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;Godzilla&#8217; (1954) with director Ishir\u014d Honda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The sound department\u00a0 consisted of Academy Award\u00ae nominated sound specialist <strong>Erik Aadahl<\/strong> as lead the designer, along with two-time Academy Award\u00ae winner<strong> Ethan Van der Ryn<\/strong> (supervising), Academy Award\u00ae winner <strong>Gregg Landaker<\/strong> (sound effects), Academy Award nominated <strong>Rick Kline<\/strong> (music mix), and <strong>Tim LeBlanc<\/strong> (dialogue). The team mixed the Dolby Atmos version of <i>Godzilla<\/i> at Warner Bros. Van der Ryn and Aadahl tried experimenting with Ifukube&#8217;s technique but only found their Godzilla&#8217;s voice after six months and many layers of experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>The duo are fiercely secretive about the final sound&#8217;s creation, telling news radio <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/05\/18\/312839612\/whats-in-a-roar-crafting-godzillas-iconic-sound\" target=\"_blank\">NPR<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I think more so than any other sound effect we&#8217;ve designed, we have a certain protectiveness over that sound. It&#8217;s when you&#8217;re giving voice to something, you&#8217;re giving it its soul. And if we tell everybody exactly how we did it, people will think of that when they hear the roar, and we want them to think of Godzilla,&#8221;<\/em> Aadahl says.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We actually were sworn to take it to our graves with us,&#8221;<\/em> Van der Ryn adds.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ORSvf8eVa0g\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Director Gareth Edwards when discussing the roar (in other interviews) has said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;O<em>ne of the breakthroughs for them<\/em> [Van der Ryn and Aadahl]<em> was this new microphone recording device. You know when you shoot in the camera in high speed and play it back you get slow motion? There are these ultra fast recording devices that, when you record and play it back, it\u2019s a hundred times slower and it\u2019s got all the fidelity in it. Something as simple as unscrewing a Coke bottle, when you play it back it\u2019s like thunder or a roar or something. So this whole new world of audio was opened up. A lot of the sounds in there are very strange things from using these scientific microphones.&#8221; <\/em>(<a experimenting with friction sounds (recording rusty car doors, rubbing the surface of a tom drum).<\/p>\n<p>Once finished capturing the samples, they manipulated the files in the studio, processing the audio with pitch-shifting techniques and phasing, thus creating some truly unique audio.
