In a win for filmmakers, creatives and grassroots marketing, the stalwart tech company Yahoo has joined forces with Talenthouse (a job listing and collaborative works platform) to invite designers and filmmakers to create advertising content to support its Android launcher/homescreen app, Aviate.
There are three project opportunities offered, all of which offer financial rewards, are open to creatives anywhere and the chance for participants’ work to be used as part of Yahoo’s digital advertising campaign. Senior members of the tech giant’s marketing team will join the judging panel alongside award-winning filmmaker Ben Charles Edwards who will guest judge the film category.
For artists and designers:
- Submit artwork into a template which tells the story of Aviate by capturing one or some of it’s product descriptions: Simple, Beautiful, Intelligent, Personalised (submission link).
- Submit artwork (1200 x 627 pixels) that captures the idea of being ‘simply smart’ (submission link).
- Submit 30 second short films / Vines / videos inspired by the idea ‘learns your moves’ (submission link).
Winning submissions will be awarded US$2500 and a mentoring session with Robert Bridge, VP and Head of International Marketing at Yahoo, with a chance their submission will be featured in the app’s marketing campaign (duh). The remaining eighteen finalists selected (six for each category) will also each receive US$500 for their work.
In addition, a social media voting campaign for each category will award three winners with a prize of US$1000
During a Talenthouse interview, Head of Marketing and Creative Services at Yahoo, Richard Stanley, gave a few tips and some advice for those wishing to submit work, “Take some time to think about how we all enjoy technology, but more importantly the interface and the resulting experience of using that technology.”
When asked how creatives could make their submission stand out from the crowd, Stanley added, “We receive a lot of CVs, creative and new business pitches from individuals and businesses in the creative sphere. What always stands out is a submission of any of these types that has taken the time to understand the business opportunities Yahoo might be working on. These submissions are the ones that impress because they demonstrate the power of creative thought meeting business need.”
