Modern Cinematography with Ellery Ryan

This two day course with AFI Award Winner Ellery Ryan (I Love You Too, Van Diemen’s Land, The Rage In Placid Lake) is designed to investigate the theory and practice of visual storytelling. Learn how to take a written text and use technical and interpretive skills to help a Director convert that text into an engaging visual story.

1 – 2 March

Film & Television Directing With Rowan Woods
AFI winner Rowan Woods (The Boys, Rake, Little Fish) will lead this Masterclass for emerging directors looking for an insider’s take on the current climate of directing in Australia, and the significant differences between film & television projects.

5 April

Video Making 101: Shoot, Edit, Publish

If you or your staff, want to shoot, edit and upload your own short videos for your corporate website, social media marketing or just for your own interest, then this is a hands-on, technical course is for you. You will learn: basic camera operation, basic video-making principles, data management and ingesting your video footage, basic editing skills using Adobe Premier Pro and uploading your video in a variety of formats, and publishing to a range of Social Media Platforms.

10 – 12 April
Introduction to Documentary
This two day course lead by AFI nominated documentary Producer Dylan Blowen will give you everything you need to know about documentaries and how to start moving your documentary ideas into actual productions.

12 – 13 April

Data Wrangling on Set: File Based Cameras

This one day course is an introduction to managing data from file-based cameras in an on-set environment.?Working in the AFTRS Studio, you will get an overview of all types of data and metadata from file-based cameras from manufacturers including Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, Arri & Red and you will learn how to prepare for and manage this data confidently and responsibly in a high pressure on-set environment.

Portable Filmmaking: iJournalism And Visual Storytelling On the iPhone/iPad

Learn how to shoot quality (and watchable) video stories from your iPhone and create stories on the go from the field. Plus gain experience in: framing, focus, sound, coverage, locations, sound, props and dealing with interviewees.

10 – 11 May


Advanced Lighting Skills

An Advanced Lighting Course for Cinematographers wanting to expand their knowledge in lighting for film and television drama. Over three days, students will light a set to various scripted scenarios under the tuition of a professional cinematographer. Students will work with a gaffer, best boy, camera operator, grip and two actors in AFTRS’ state of the art studios.
